Learning to read is such an exciting time! In this class, we celebrate this journey by playing games focused on learning and practicing important, basic skills - like recognizing sight words, phonics, and blending letters together to form words - which serve as the foundation for reading. The focus is on fun as we play games that teach and practice skills, such as letter patterns, vocabulary, rhyming, sounding out words, practicing sight words, consonant blends, digraphs (such as "ch," "sh," "ph," "wh," etc.), long and short vowel sounds, and much more. To further build a love of literature, the kids listen to stories and do story-inspired games and activities. There will be coin tossing and jumping and card-playing and laughing and lots of learning to read! In addition, children will practice vital cooperative work and social skills in this group-focused class. Expect the kids to bring home instructions for some of these games, so you can continue playing and learning together at home.
This class is limited to
eight students.
*Rather than a set age
range, it's more important that this class be a good match for the skills- and
interest-level of your child. This class is most appropriate for kids who
solidly know their letters, may already be reading a little, and would like to practice their
decoding skills. Equally as important as skills-level, your child's interest in learning
to read in a cooperative group environment is essential for us all to have
maximum learning and fun in this class.
If children are taking both Reading Games and Math Games, they'll have a half-hour of supervised free time when they can have a snack from home, take a quiet break, or play together.
