Lots of Other Cool Classes and Tutoring Services

Pegasus Learning now offers TUTORING SERVICES in reading, math, and writing skills for kids ages 4 - 10 years old! Like the Pegasus classes, the focus is primarily on learning cooperatively in a fun, hands-on, minds-on way. We explore learning through games, projects, and activities as well as individually-prepared lessons aimed specifically at the needs, energy, and style of the child. The mission of Pegasus Learning is to provide a protected time and space where children can explore a variety of basic skills ... the most important one being the maintenance of their love of learning. Sliding scale of pricing available.

Do you have a small group of homeschoolers and a subject of interest? Pegasus Learning also offers INDIVIDUALIZED CLASSES for small groups of elementary-aged homeschoolers in the Pioneer Valley. I'll come to you with all the plans and supplies to teach a six- to eight-week class of your choosing geared specifically for the age range of your group. Here are some of the classes available:

  • Whatever the Weather: Learn all about meteorology by doing, experimenting, and exploring! We'll make our own rain, tornadoes, and clouds. We'll make a weather station and keep journals of what we observe and measure. We'll learn about the atmosphere, thunder and lightening, clouds, snow, and so much more, through hands-on activities and experiments that would make Willard Scott jealous.
  • Books and Beyond: A book club for the younger set, we'll share some of the best children's books (picture books or short chapter books, depending on age range), discuss them, and then do fun activities inspired by what we've read. The activities focus on a variety of academic and artistic skills, such as developing hand-eye coordination, reading skills, developing analytic thinking, exploring different types of art, and so much more. Literature is a joy in itself, and we'll multiplication the joy by having fun while learning beyond the book.
  • The Fun Side of Multiplication and Division: Let's set aside the paper and pencils and begin the journey into multiplication and division with an understanding of the ideas behind those concepts through activities and games. Multiplication and division is not just numbers on a page. It's sharing raisins, splitting up cookies, measuring our feet, playing card games, throwing dice, and playing balloon volleyball! This introduction to multiplication and division focuses on the conceptual understanding of these topics through experiments, activities, and games in order to provide a strong foundation to build a lifetime of mathematics.
  • Art Smart: We will investigate the fascinating world of art history with a strong emphasis on hands-on exploration, child-directed learning, and most of all big fun. We’ll explore art history by examining art work, books, videos, audios, and hands-on experiences. For example, we'll examine the works of Michelangelo and then lay on our backs and paint to see what it must have felt like to create the Sistine Chapel. We’ll have to save a warm day for Jackson Pollack because who doesn’t like splatter painting outside? But we’ll also investigate where Pollack was coming from personally and historically, what his paintings “mean,” and how people reacted to them at the time.  Impressionists, Pointillism, Cubism, Surrealism and more interesting periods in art history will be examined, explored and experienced together.
  • Bones, Hearts, and Other Parts: In this eight- to ten-week class for kids 8 - 12 years-old, we'll explore anatomy by making and experimenting. We'll do lots of cutting out and colored to create detailed but easy-to-make hands-on paper models to learn all about what's going on under our skin. And we'll perform experiments to learn, for example, about our senses, the capacity of our lungs, the process of tooth decay, how our hearts work, and so many more fascinating concepts about anatomy.
  • Pop-Up Writing through the Genres: We'll dive into writing through different genres using fun "pop-up card" projects. Each week will focus on a different genre or two, such as mystery, sci-fi, tall tales, historical fiction, and adventure, and our learning will take place through nifty pop-up art projects incorporating short writing assignments. This class is a good match both for the reluctant writers who could use a little fun laced into their writing projects as well as the enthusiastic writers eager to explore different genres of writing. This class is geared to kids capable of writing a short story, for example, so primarily kids who would be in 3-5th grades.
  • And so many more classes! Do you have a topic in mind that you'd like to explore with your group? Let's talk. Maybe I have a class to fit your groups' interests.
